Metal-core wicks — also known as cored wicks — feature a thin metal wire (zinc, tin, or historically, lead) running through the center of a cotton braid. The metal core provides rigidity, preventing the wick from curling or flopping over in deep melt pools.
Through the 1990s, some candle manufacturers used lead-core wicks for this structural purpose. Testing at the time found that burning a lead-core wick released lead particulate into the air at levels that raised serious health concerns-3. Lead is a neurotoxin with no safe level of human exposure.
Lead-core wicks were banned in the United States in 2003. However, "banned" and "gone from every candle on earth" are not the same claim — especially for candles made or sold outside U.S. regulatory reach. Some imported or bargain candles may still contain lead-core wicks.
After the lead ban, manufacturers switched to zinc-core and tin-core wicks. These remain legal in the U.S. and are still manufactured and used today. These wicks offer greater rigidity than flat-braided cotton while remaining natural and metal-free. They burn cleanly and consistently, and the paper core helps the wick stay upright in softer waxes-. They are a solid choice for container candles where a pure cotton wick might struggle.
